Do you manage a small home business in Maryland? Standard Maryland insurance for your home contents may offer some financial protection for loss or damage of office equipment that is used in your home business. However, you are uncertain about this, check with your agent or insurer, rather than assume your business items are covered.

Carrying adequate insurance means that your computers can be replaced easily and quickly if they are stolen from your home or accidentally damaged. While it’s essential to be able to replace the physical equipment you depend on to help you manage your home business, it’s also important to take steps to preserve critical business data.

Data stored on a computer’s hard drive can be lost when the processor fails, or when the hard drive is damaged because of a power surge or becomes infected by a computer virus. Data can also be lost because of a software malfunction or operator error. In an informal business situation, it’s easy to forget to back up data regularly.

Make a habit of taking backup copies of business data every day. There are a number of ways of keeping backup data, depending on the needs of the business:

• Back up onto an external hard drive. It’s a good idea to store the external hard drive away from the home office.
• Attach vital documents to emails and send them to an email account.
• Store backup data remotely using automated “cloud” facilities provided by software companies.

Loss of data could interrupt the activities of your home business. To supplement your Maryland insurance protection for office hardware, ensure that there are procedures in place to back up critical business data!
